World Championship of Online Poker Comes to a Close

By David Richardson

09/23/2008

After more than 2 weeks of online tournament play and nearly $40 million in cash prizes the 2008 World Championship of Online Poker has come to an end.  The 33 events produced some competitive play, none more so than the Main Event which was won yesterday.  Let’s take a look at how the last of the 2008 WCOOP turned out.

It’s safe to say the tournament was a huge success for PokerStars, the online poker room which sponsors the annual event.  Turn-out was so strong that they blew past their original guarantee prize pool of $30 million by nearly $10 million.  In the end 22,873 player from 119 countries around the world added to this massive prize pool with players from 80 of those countries making cashes.

But of course it was the big money No Limit Hold’em Main Event which really drew in the online poker players.  Over 2,100 players paid the $5,200 buy-in or won their way to a seat for a piece of the $10,925,000 being awarded.  But only one could take home top prize and that was U.S. player Charles “ckingusc” King.

On the second day of the 2 day event the playing field had been narrowed down to just 60 players.  Those 60 who had been playing poker for hours were quickly whittled farther to the final 9.  Charles “ckingusc” King had the advantage of going into the final table as the chip leader.

Positon 8: Matt “ShoesRDurrty” Swoboda — 6,560,232
Positon 9: Markush13 — 11,446,207

For his solid playing “ckingusc” took home a prize of $1,265,432.23, a WCOOP bracelet and some serious bragging rights.
