The Cards of Community Poker: How they affect the bet

The community cards of games like Texas Hold’em and Omaha poker definitely affect how you’ll act within each of the four rounds of betting because these are cards the whole table can see and use in their hand.  The first round comes after each player is dealt their 2 hole cards face down, which are the only cards that are their own.  Then the flop will be dealt.

The flop is the first 3 of 5 community cards dealt face up in the center of the table.  After the Flop there is a second round of betting followed by the fourth community card called the Turn.  Once the turn is dealt there is a third round of betting.  Finally the last community card called the River is dealt followed by the fouth and final round of betting before the showdown where the remaining players will show there hole cards and a winner will be determined.

There are a couple of other guidelines to betting in Texas Hold’em.  In no limit and pot limit betting structures there is no limit on the number of raises allowed in a single betting round and the only monetary limit to the bet is how much is in the pot.  Typically in a fixed limit game of Hold’em during the first 2 rounds of betting the raises must be the equivalent of the low limit and the last 2 rounds have bets equal to the higher limit.

So if you were playing a fixed limit game of Texas Hold’em with the limits of $2/$4 the first 2 rounds of betting would be $2 and the last 2 will be $4.  Also it’s common to have limits to the number of raises that are allowed in each betting round.  In most poker rooms the limit is 3 raises but during head’s up play it can increase to 5 or the limit may be removed all together.

These are the basics to how community cards affect the way you’ll bet in a game of Texas Hold’em no matter what your position is at the table.  Of course where you are sitting at the table also weighs heavily on your bet decision making, but that is detailed in another article on our website.  For this article we’ll now examine each betting round and what the cards dealt means to your betting strategy.

Pre-Flop

During the pre-flop betting round your position matters as much as the cards in your hand as to whether you should raise, call or fold.  No community cards have been dealt yet so this round is where opponents will really try to read you and the strength of your hole cards.  This puts those in the early betting positions at a disadvantage compared to those in the late position who will have the opportunity to see what all the other players do at the table and read into that.

green chipEarly position:
Because of your positioning a player needs to play very tight in one of the early seats.  You have to make up for your lack of knowledge on what other players are going to do by playing only strong hands.  If you don’t you can find yourself in a spot where the pot is raised several times before it comes back round to you then you have to decide if the weaker hand is worth throwing more in the pot or you’ll have to forfeit the bet you made to call originally.  Either way you’re at a serious disadvantage.  It’s suggested you only play hole cards that make a pair of 10 or higher, Aces paired with face cards of the same suit, or a suited KQ.

black chipMiddle position:
The middle position has a little more leeway than the early position does before the flop.  In addition to playing any of the early position hands, middle position players with pairs of 7 or higher or Aces paired with a card that’s 10 or higher as well as connected cards of 10 or higher are strong enough hands to play.

red chipLate position:
These are the most advantageous positions, with the dealer position being the very best position because they’re last to make a move in a betting round.  In these spots you have the opportunity to see what the rest of the table has done giving you ample opportunity to size up your opponents.  Because of this it’s in these positions that bluffing is safest and playing more aggressive can pay off in the way of getting others to fold.

In addition to player any of the hands for the early and middle positions, those in the late positions can play any pairs that are 4 or higher, hole cards of 8 or higher, especially connectors, and if no one has raised yet even weaker hands can be used to raise and hopefully lead others to fold.
