Over the years the popularity of poker has led to many variations of the game.  Some are more popular than others, but there’s a place online for all of them and players who are eager for the chance to play them.  The rooms below offer players a wide variety in stakes, competition levels, and good traffic.

Texas Hold'em

Texas Hold’em has quickly replaced 7 Card Stud as the most widely played type of poker.  Texas Hold’em is a community card game which means to make hands players use not only their own cards but also community cards open to the whole table.  Using the 5 community cards in addition to 2 hole cards adds a new element to the game requiring players to use strategy and read their other opponents well if they want to win.

No Limit Texas Hold’em

Unlike Limit Texas Hold’em, No Limit Texas Hold’em doesn’t have preset limits on the amount that can be wagered.  The all-in bet is a defining feature of No Limit Hold’em and this game is the most common version played on televised poker tournaments.

Texas Hold'em Tournaments

Tournaments are a big draw in online poker, and again Texas Hold’em is the most frequently played game for tournaments.  There’s a huge selection of tournaments to choose from that vary not only in the game but the stakes, amount of tables, prize pools, the type of tournament it is and more.

Omaha

This is another community card version of poker that is quickly catching on at the tables.  It’s close to Texas Hold’em in how it’s played, but the key difference with Omaha is that each player gets four hole cards of which they can only use 2 to make a hand.

Omaha Hi

The defining characteristic of Omaha Hi is that the pot only goes to the player with the best hand, as in traditional poker games.

Omaha Hi/Lo

Omaha Hi/Lo is the other variation of Omaha.  In this version the player with the best hand splits the pot with the player holding the lowest hand.  However, there are set standards that must be met for it to be considered the lowest hand.  The hand must consist of nothing higher than an 8 and have no pairs or the pot will go entirely to the player with the best hand.

7 Card Stud

For a long time 7 Card Stud was the epitome of poker and is still a highly popular game today.  In this game players are first dealt two cards face down and one face up for the whole table to see.  After initial bets are made 3 more cards are dealt face up to each player with another round of betting after each card.  Each player is then dealt one more card face down and they use these 7 cards to make a 5 card hand.

7 Card Stud Hi/Lo

Other Games

Razz

Razz is a stud game in which the object is to get the lowest hand to take the pot.  The lowest hand is considered Ace low to 5 and can be a straight or flush.  The cards are dealt in the same way as 7 Card Stud with cards falling both face up and face down.  A variation of Razz is Deuce to 7 Razz.

5 Card Stud

5 Card Stud was the earliest version of Stud, but has fallen out of popularity of late making it harder to find in online poker rooms.  Players are dealt one card face down and one card face up before the first round of betting.  Then there’s another card dealt face up and a round of betting, followed by two more cards dealt face up with subsequent betting rounds.

Draw Poker

Unlike other poker games, in Draw Poker players have the chance to discard some of their cards and draw more from the deck.  Also unique to this game is the fact that all of the cards are dealt all at once face down, meaning there’s a lot less information to go on.  This game is popular for home games, however it is difficult to find in online poker rooms.

Crazy Pineapple

Crazy Pineapple is a relatively new community poker game with some similarities to Texas Hold’em.  Three cards are first dealt to each player but then they each discard one of those 3 cards after the flop betting round.  (In regular Pineapple games the discard is made before the flop.)  Other than this difference in the beginning, Crazy Pineapple is played basically the same as Texas Hold’em.
